Pattern
Dative clitic pronouns: îmi (to me), îți (to you), îi (to him/her), ne (to us), vă (to you pl.), le (to them). They go BEFORE the verb: Îmi dai cartea? (Give me the book?).
Explanation
Dative clitics indicate the indirect object — the recipient of an action. Îmi dai cartea? (Will you give me the book?). Îți spun mâine (I'll tell you tomorrow). Îi place (He/she likes — literally "to him/her it pleases"). These clitics are short, unstressed forms that always come before the conjugated verb.
The full forms (mie, ție, lui, ei, nouă, vouă, lor) exist for emphasis: Mie îmi place, ție nu (I like it, you don't — emphasizing both parties). But normally only the clitic appears: Îmi place.
Dative clitics are used in many constructions:
- With îmi place (I like) and other dative experiencer verbs
- With îmi pare (it seems to me)
- With îmi trebuie (I need)
- For indirect objects: Îmi dă cartea (he gives me the book)
- With body parts: Îmi spăl mâinile (I wash my hands — literally "I wash to-me the hands")
Examples
| Romanian | English |
|---|---|
| Îmi dai un pix, te rog? | Will you give me a pen, please? |
| Îți spun mâine. | I'll tell you tomorrow. |
| Îi place ciocolata. | He/she likes chocolate. |
| Ne trebuie ajutor. | We need help. |
| Vă mulțumesc pentru sfat. | I thank you (pl.) for the advice. |
Common mistakes
- Forgetting the î-: Mi dai cartea? is wrong (except when mi attaches to a vowel: mi-e foame).
- Placing the clitic after the verb: Dai îmi cartea? is wrong; it's Îmi dai cartea?
- Confusing dative and accusative clitics: Mă (me, accusative) ≠ îmi (to me, dative).
Heritage learner note
Heritage speakers absorb dative clitics naturally from constructions like îmi place, îmi pare, îmi trebuie. The challenge is producing them in less-familiar contexts: indirect objects (îți dau cartea — I give you the book), reflexive dative (îmi spăl mâinile — I wash my hands). Heritage learners often drop the clitic when it feels redundant, but standard Romanian almost always requires it. Also: spelling. Heritage speakers write without diacritics out of habit; the standard forms are îmi, îți, îi with the diacritics. Practice writing them correctly.
