One and two agree with the noun

Unu and doi are the counting forms. In front of a noun, one and two take the gender of that noun.

RomanianEnglish
un leu, un băiatone leu, one boy (masculine)
o casă, o orăone house, one hour (feminine)
doi lei, doi băiețitwo lei, two boys (masculine)
două case, două oretwo houses, two hours (feminine)

Nouă (nine) is spelled exactly like nouă (new, feminine) and nouă (to us). The context always tells you which one it is.

11 to 19: add -sprezece

The teens are the unit plus -sprezece ("on ten"). Three change a little: 12, 14 and 16.

Hundreds and thousands

Sută (hundred) and mie (thousand) are feminine nouns, so they count like o casă, două case.

  • o sută

    100

  • două sute

    200

  • o mie

    1,000

  • două mii

    2,000

Bigger numbers are put together the way you say them: o sută douăzeci și trei (123), trei sute cincizeci (350), o mie nouă sute (1,900).

The de rule

From twenty up, put de between the number and the noun. Below twenty, don't. What decides it is the last two digits: 01 to 19, no de; 20 to 99 or 00, de.
