Pattern
Imperative of a merge: singular mergi! (go!), plural mergeți!. Imperative of a întoarce: singular întoarce!, plural întoarceți! (used with reflexive: întoarce-te! — turn around!).
Explanation
Direction commands are essential for getting around: telling a taxi driver to turn, giving someone directions, asking a friend to stop. For a merge (to go), the singular imperative is mergi (with the same form as 2sg present), plural is mergeți. Mergi drept! (Go straight!). Mergeți la stânga! (Go left, plural).
A întoarce (to turn) usually appears reflexively as a se întoarce (to turn oneself, to return). The reflexive imperative attaches the reflexive clitic to the imperative with a hyphen: Întoarce-te! (Turn around! / Come back!). For the formal/plural: Întoarceți-vă!
Common direction imperatives to memorize: Mergi! (Go!), Stai! (Stop!), Așteaptă! (Wait!), Vino! (Come!), Pleacă! (Leave!), Întoarce-te! (Turn around!), Continuă! (Continue!).
Examples
| Romanian | English |
|---|---|
| Mergi drept înainte! | Go straight ahead! |
| Mergeți la prima stradă pe dreapta! | Go to the first street on the right! |
| Întoarce-te! Ai uitat ceva. | Turn around! You forgot something. |
| Întoarceți-vă la pagina cinci. | Turn back to page five. |
| Continuă până la semafor! | Continue until the traffic light! |
Common mistakes
- Forgetting the hyphen on reflexive imperatives: It's întoarce-te, not întoarce te or întoarcete.
- Using indicative for commands: Mergi acum (you're going now) vs. Mergi! (go!) — same form, different context.
- Mixing tu/voi forms: Don't say mergeți to one friend; that's plural/formal.
