Pattern
Place prepositions: lângă (next to), în fața (in front of), în spatele (behind), pe (on), sub (under), între (between).
Explanation
Simple prepositions like pe (on), sub (under), între (between), lângă (next to) take the noun directly: Cartea e pe masă (The book is on the table). Pisica e sub pat (The cat is under the bed). Stau lângă fereastră (I sit next to the window).
Compound prepositions like în fața (in front of) and în spatele (behind) include a noun ("face" or "back") with the definite article. They require the genitive case for the following noun. În fața casei (in front of the house — casei is the genitive of casa). În spatele bisericii (behind the church — bisericii is the genitive of biserica).
For names and proper nouns, use lui for masculine names and the genitive form for feminine: în fața lui Ion (in front of Ion), în fața Mariei (in front of Maria). Genitive case will be covered properly at A2; for now, recognize the structure.

Common mistakes
- Using "în" instead of "pe" for surfaces: It's pe masă (on the table), not în masă.
- Forgetting the genitive after "în fața": În fața casa is wrong; it's în fața casei.
- Translating "next to" as "cu": Cu mine means "with me," not "next to me." Use lângă mine.
