Pattern
For a specific date, use pe + day + month: pe 15 martie (on March 15th).
Explanation
To say "on a specific date" in Romanian, use the preposition pe followed by the day number and the month name. Pe 5 mai (on May 5th), pe 20 decembrie (on December 20th). The day is a cardinal number (1, 2, 3…), not an ordinal — unlike English "the 5th" or French "le 5."
Month names in Romanian are not capitalized: ianuarie, februarie, martie, aprilie, mai, iunie, iulie, august, septembrie, octombrie, noiembrie, decembrie. They follow the Latin pattern closely, easy for Romance language speakers.
For the first of the month, Romanian does often use an ordinal: întâi (first) — pe întâi mai (on May 1st), commonly. For other days, stick with the cardinal: pe 2 mai, pe 3 mai.
Examples
| Romanian | English |
|---|---|
| Ne vedem pe 15 martie. | We'll see each other on March 15th. |
| Ziua mea e pe 7 august. | My birthday is on August 7th. |
| Vine pe 1 mai. | He's coming on May 1st. |
| Plec pe 22 decembrie. | I'm leaving on December 22nd. |
| Pe 31 octombrie e Halloween. | Halloween is on October 31st. |
Common mistakes
- Using "în" for dates: În 15 martie is wrong for a date; use pe 15 martie.
- Capitalizing months: Martie, not Martie with capital — unless at sentence start.
- Using ordinals: Pe al cincilea mai sounds bookish; just pe 5 mai.
