Pattern

Colloquial future: o să + subjunctive verb. O să merg (I will go), O să mâncăm (we will eat). The o să is invariable; the verb changes per person in subjunctive form.

Explanation

The o să future is the everyday future tense of Romanian. Native speakers use it constantly in conversation. The structure: invariable o să + subjunctive verb (which usually matches the present indicative except in the 3rd person singular and plural, where it takes special forms).

Subjunctive forms after o să:

  • 1sg: o să merg (I'll go)
  • 2sg: o să mergi (you'll go)
  • 3sg/pl: o să meargă (he/she/they'll go — note the subjunctive shape)
  • 1pl: o să mergem (we'll go)
  • 2pl: o să mergeți (you'll go)

The 3rd person subjunctive often differs from the indicative: el merge (he goes) vs. o să meargă (he'll go). For -i verbs: el vorbește (he speaks) vs. o să vorbească (he'll speak). Memorize the 3rd person subjunctive for each verb.

You can also use the negative: N-o să merg (I won't go), with n-o să as a contraction of nu o să.

Common mistakes

  • Using indicative instead of subjunctive: O să el vine is wrong; it's O să vină.
  • Conjugating "o să": It's invariable — never eu om să, noi om să.
  • Mixing with literary future: Don't say o să voi merge; pick one form.
