Pattern
Modal verbs always trigger the subjunctive: a vrea, a putea, a trebui, a începe, a încerca, a reuși. Vreau să plec (I want to leave), Trebuie să mergi (You must go), Pot să te ajut (I can help you).
Explanation
Romanian modal verbs (those expressing wish, ability, necessity, obligation) connect to a following verb via să + subjunctive. A vrea (to want), a putea (to be able to), a trebui (must), a începe (to begin), a încerca (to try), a reuși (to succeed). All require să + subjunctive form.
Examples:
- Vreau să dorm (I want to sleep)
- Pot să cânt (I can sing)
- Trebuie să plătesc (I have to pay)
- Încerc să învăț (I'm trying to learn)
- Am început să citesc (I've started to read)
The subject of the subjunctive verb is usually the same as the subject of the modal — but it doesn't have to be. Vreau să vină (I want HIM to come) shows different subjects: I want (1sg) but the coming is by someone else (3sg). The clitic doesn't change; only context tells you the subject of the subjunctive verb.
For a trebui (must), the form is invariable: trebuie covers all persons. Only the subjunctive verb shifts: Trebuie să merg (I must go), Trebuie să meargă (he must go), Trebuie să mergem (we must go).
Examples
| Romanian | English |
|---|---|
| Vreau să dorm acum. | I want to sleep now. |
| Pot să te ajut? | Can I help you? |
| Trebuie să plec la șase. | I have to leave at six. |
| Încerc să învăț zilnic. | I try to learn daily. |
| Reușesc să termin la timp. | I'm managing to finish on time. |
Common mistakes
- Using infinitive instead of subjunctive: Vreau merge is wrong; it's Vreau să merg.
- Conjugating "trebuie": It's invariable for all persons. Eu trebuie, tu trebuie, noi trebuie.
- Dropping "să": Pot ajut is wrong; it must be Pot să te ajut.
