Pattern
Past time expressions: ieri (yesterday), alaltăieri (the day before yesterday), acum o săptămână (a week ago), weekend-ul trecut (last weekend), anul trecut (last year).
Explanation
Romanian has a rich set of past-time adverbs. The most common: ieri (yesterday), alaltăieri (the day before yesterday), aseară (last night). For longer periods: săptămâna trecută (last week), luna trecută (last month), anul trecut (last year). The adjective trecut/trecută (past, last) agrees with the noun.
For "X ago," use acum (now/ago) + amount: acum o oră (an hour ago), acum trei zile (three days ago), acum un an (a year ago). This is a fixed construction — don't translate "ago" with any other word.
For specific past times, you can combine: ieri seara (yesterday evening), azi dimineață (this morning), ieri după-amiază (yesterday afternoon). These pair naturally with the perfect compus: Ieri am mers la cinema (Yesterday I went to the cinema).
Examples
| Romanian | English |
|---|---|
| Ieri am mers la cinema. | Yesterday I went to the cinema. |
| Acum o săptămână am fost la mare. | A week ago I went to the seaside. |
| Anul trecut am vizitat Roma. | Last year I visited Rome. |
| Weekend-ul trecut am stat acasă. | Last weekend I stayed home. |
| Alaltăieri ne-am întâlnit. | The day before yesterday we met. |
Common mistakes
- Translating "ago" literally: There's no Romanian word for "ago" alone — use acum + amount.
- Forgetting agreement on "trecut": Săptămâna trecut is wrong; it's săptămâna trecută.
- Using "ultima săptămână": Means "the final week," not "last week." Use săptămâna trecută.
