Pattern

Romanian has four common diphthongs: ea, oa, ie, ia. Each is one syllable, two glided vowels.

Explanation

A diphthong is a vowel pair pronounced as a single, gliding sound inside one syllable. Romanian uses four heavily. Ea glides from a short "y" into "ah" (seara = "SYAH-ra"). Oa glides from "w" into "ah" (poate = "PWAH-teh"). Ie glides from "y" into "eh" (ieri = "YEHR"). Ia glides from "y" into "ah" (iarnă = "YAHR-nuh").

These diphthongs aren't optional decoration — they appear in extremely common words and inflections. Many feminine adjectives and nouns alternate between a single vowel and a diphthong: frumoasă (beautiful, fem.) vs. frumos (masc.); seară (evening) vs. seri (evenings). When the stress moves or the gender changes, the diphthong often appears or disappears.

Don't break them into two syllables. Po-a-te is wrong; it's poa-te, one syllable then another. English speakers tend to over-pronounce each vowel; Romanian glides them quickly. Listen for the slight "y" or "w" onset and let the second vowel carry the weight.

Common mistakes

  • Breaking diphthongs into two syllables: Po-a-te is wrong; say poa-te as one quick glide.
  • Ignoring the y/w glide: ea ≠ "ah," it's "yah." Practice "yeah" then trim it.
  • Confusing ia and ea: iarnă starts with "y-ah"; seara has "s-y-ah."
