Pattern

Cât costă ___? = "How much does ___ cost?" Singular subject takes costă; plural also takes costă in casual speech.

Explanation

To ask the price of any item, use Cât costă ___? Cât costă o pâine? (How much does a loaf of bread cost?). Cât costă merele? (How much do the apples cost?). The verb costă is technically third-person singular and matches singular subjects, but in casual speech it's used regardless of number.

The answer follows the structure Costă ___ lei (or whatever currency): Costă cinci lei (It costs 5 lei). Costă o sută douăzeci de lei (It costs 120 lei). For the grand total at a cash register, use Cât face în total? (How much in total?).

You can drop costă in context — pointing at something and asking Cât? is fine, like English "How much?" but feels brisk. Adding vă rog (please) softens it: Cât costă, vă rog?

Examples

RomanianEnglish
Cât costă o cafea? How much does a coffee cost?
Cât costă biletul de tren? How much is the train ticket?
Cât costă un kilogram de roșii?How much does a kilo of tomatoes cost?
Cât costă în total? How much in total?
Cât costă, vă rog?How much is it, please?

Common mistakes

  • Using "câți" or "câte": Cât is uncountable here (asking about price, not quantity).
  • Asking with "este": Cât este preț? sounds bookish; just cât costă is natural.
  • Forgetting "de" with 20+: Costă 100 lei is wrong; say 100 de lei.
